Surrealism

Surrealism originated in France in the 1920’s. Although figurative, this movement is in search of an elaborated reconstruction of a dream world, trying to ‘photograph’ a world of pure fantasy. Artists painted unnerving and illogical scenes with photographic precision. They would represent an alien world where images range from dreamlike serenity to nightmarish fantasy. Dali symbolises this style.

Some Surreal artists include Brauner, Dali, Delvaux, Ernst, Kahlo, Magritte and Miro.
