James Francis "Frank" Hurley was one of five children and was raised in Glebe, Australia. When he was 17 he bought his first camera and taught himself photography. Hurley was a photographer and adventurer who participated in a number of expeditions to Antarctica and served as an official photographer with Australian forces during both world wars.
