Renaissance art began in Italy in the 14th century and later spread to the rest of Northern Europe (Northern Renaissance), where man began to realize his importance in the world.
Previously, art had been based on religion, showing heaven and saint, and bore little relationship to what was happening in the world. With this renaissance (or rebirth) came art where figures became more life-like, space became more real and the Christian story was told from a human perspective.
The Renaissance period can be broken into the Early Renaissance and the High Renaissance.
Some Early Renaissance painters include Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Donatello, Ghiberti, Ghirlandaio, Giotto, Filippino, Lippi, Mantegna, Masaccio, Perugino, Piero della Francesca, Pollaiuolo, Signorelli and Verrocchio.
Some High Renaissance painters include Andrea del Sarto, Fra Bartolommeo, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and Titan.
Northern Renaissance artists include Altdorfer, Durer, Elsheimer, Grunewald, Mabuse, Massys and Van der Weyden.
